Samuel B. and John Crozier were the first settlers around Red Bud. They developed most of the area south of Market Street. The first brick building was the 1855 building on the corner of North Main and East Market by the Croziers and Richmond Durfee.
Prior to Red Bud being established, a little town called Prairieville was started in 1837 about two miles south of the present city. It did not flourish and more immigrants settled in what is now Red Bud, which was named by Mr. Durfee for the large patch of redbud flora that was growing on the corner of Main and Market. In 1840 Mr. Durfee became Red Bud's first merchant when he built a store and began selling goods. Old timers called Red Bud "Blossom City" and the nickname has carried on.
It wasn't until 1866 that Red Bud was organized. The village charter was received in 1867. The population in 1875 was 1, 730. Red Bud was incorporated as a city i n 1875 when a vote was taken for the purpose of incorporating as a city under the general law. The result being 94 votes for incorporation and 76 votes against. (This original document is in the museum). An election was held and Jacob Miller was the first mayor.
The beautiful Red Bud City Hall on East Market was built in 1894. The contractor was Fred Droege of Red Bud whose low bid was $8,000. The historic building has had several renovations. In 1997 the outside received a major facelift. Plans were made for an extensive renovation of the first and second floor. In November of 2005 this renovation was completed at a cost of $1,200,000.
